The seventh annual competition was held at EliteSportz in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday October 29, 2011. The Keller Polecats and TexasPoleVault clubs competed and had a great time putting up some amazing marks for this early in the season.

Josh Sonnen Summer 2011 TAAF Region Champion 16'1"

At 6'1", the 17 year old Sonnen is an entering senior at Midlothian High School. He began his pole vaulting career in the 7th grade and has never looked back since.

Sonnen balances his pole vaulting with work at Freebird's during the week and helping with special needs children at First Baptist Dallas on Sunday mornings. He has been training with George Rodriguez of Elite Sportz of Haslet, Texas. Rodriguez, a 17' vaulter himself in his younger days, coaches Josh alongside his son, Devin, himself a 17' vaulter in recent years. The Haslet facility has been Sonnen's main staple for practice this summer. Recently, Sonnen finished 1st at the TAAF Region 4 regional meet in Flower Mound, Texas with a jump of 16'1" (seen here) though he had valiant attempts at 16'7" (seen here as well). Sonnen advances to the TAAF state meet in Waco where he will continue to push his PR of 16'6" he set this past spring. Asked what he thinks of Elite Sportz, Sonnen says, "George and Devin are incredible coaches, and they have technically pushed me harder than anyone else in the past, and it really starting to pay off." With the 17' mark on Sonnen's immediate horizon, he will be a good athlete to watch, both from high school competitors as well as college recruiters.

My progression through the sport. I hit a set back a couple years ago when I tore my ACL and had to wait to have surgery due to rapid growth in my legs.
After that, i started gaining confidence and just progressed through poles. I started on 13'3"s and 150's and I'm now on 16'1"s and 190's. I do most of my practice from four left where my PR is 15'. Jumping from a short distance extends my practice time significantly. I'm and currently ranked 2nd in Texas and 3rd in the nation for the class of 2012, and I plan on attending the Air Force Academy.

Zoe McKinley New National Record Youth Girls Pole Vault 13 y/o

Zoe Mckinley is in the summer before her 9th Grade Year. Zoe jumped 11'10" to set a new USATF National Record for Youth Girls Pole Vault. Zoe jumped 11'9 at the San Marcos River Vault, The 12'0" at the Quintana Beach vault followed by this National Record in Hallsville, Tx on Thursday June 23 2011 at the Southwestern USATF District meet.

13 y/o 8th Grader Jump 11'9" At San Marcos River Vault

Zoe McKinley jumped 11'9" at the San Marcos River Vault on Saturday June 4th.

The new height increased her PR by 4 inches over her previous jump of 11'5". Zoe Is 13 y/o and will be in the 9th grade next year.

Congratulations to Zoe Mckinley, EliteSportz in Fort Worth, her dad Jeff and her coach Devin Rodriguez.

Silver for Freshman Desiree Freier

For Justin Northwest freshman Desiree Freier, it was an eye-opening experience at the Class 5A state track and field meet last weekend.
Not only did the pole vaulting specialist compete against the best that the state had to offer, she reached a new personal milestone and made some new friends.
Freier finished second with a personal record of 12-3. Round Rock McNeil's Kaitlin Petrillose won the state title with an effort of 12-6. And yet it was Petrillose who turned into Freier's best ally.
"Really, she encouraged me as I was going through the whole competition," Freier said. "It surprised me because I didn't think it was going to be that way at all."
The event is based who will advance as the bar is raised. Competitors were eliminated if they missed three consecutive attempts at a certain height.
"I was really nervous and thought I would vomit," Freier said. "It was a horrible warmup. I just didn't take off on any of them. I thought if I didn't get a medal, I would be letting a lot of people down."
The afternoon started with Freier easily clearing 10-6 on her first effort. She cleared 11-0 on her second attempt and then 11-6 on her first.
This was getting good. When the bar went to 12-0, Freier cleared, as did Petrillose. When Tomball's Brittany Wooten couldn't clear, that meant Freier was guaranteed at least second place.
The contest turned into a game of can-you-top-this. The bar went to 12-3. Petrillose cleared. Freier matched her.
"The adrenaline was going though me," Freier said. "I was actually getting more and more excited. I was having fun. I was putting all of my effort into it. I wanted [the state title]. I was hungry for it."
At 12-6, the senior Petrillose went over the bar. Freier tried but it wasn't meant to be.
"She wasn't intimidated, and she had an excellent meet," her soon-to-be stepfather George Rodriguez said. "To have a freshman take second and clear 12-3 is really unheard of."
Freier will take a couple of weeks off before resuming her training in early June. The goal is to break the national 14-year-old record of 12-61/2 before her 15th birthday on July 24.
"I gained a lot of things," Freier said. "I met new people. I have self confidence. I love the competition."

Desiree Freier a freshman from Northwest Justin HIgh School competed at the 2011 Clyde LittleField Texas Relays. The highest jumping freshman in the nation tied for 5th with a jump of 12'1" . Desiree has a best of 12'2" and is working hard to get to the 12'7" National record for a 14 y/o and 12'9" the national record for a freshman.

Desi will be competing the 7-5A District Meet this Tuesday at Coppell HIgh School in Coppell, Texas. Their will be stiff competition from the Coppel High School pole vaulting crew.
